The Nigerian Senate has dismissed claims that it recently passed a new Cybercrime Act 2025, describing the reports as false and misleading.
In a statement, lawmakers explained that the only cybercrime legislation currently in force remains the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) (Amendment) Act 2024, which President Bola Tinubu signed into law in February last year.
Senate officials stressed that while discussions on possible amendments began in May 2025, no new bill has been debated or approved. The chamber has also been on recess since late July and will not resume plenary until late September.
The clarification follows a wave of social media posts suggesting a fresh cybercrime law had already been passed. The Senate urged Nigerians to rely on verified government channels for accurate legislative updates and to disregard unverified online claims.
