Northern Groups Allege Wike’s Abuse of Power

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has accused FCT Minister Nyesom Wike of allegedly abusing his office and undermining democratic governance in Nigeria. In a statement, the coalition expressed concerns that Wike has repeatedly overstepped the boundaries of his ministerial role, citing what it described as the manipulation of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed. The group warned that such actions could erode institutional integrity and the principles of federalism.

Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, CNG’s National Coordinator, said Wike’s tenure has been marked by unwarranted interference in political and institutional matters beyond his constitutional mandate. Charanchi alleged that Wike’s interventions extend to opposition parties and other arms of government, raising questions about the independence of agencies like the EFCC. “The Commission’s dismissal of Governor Mohammed’s claims as ‘wild’ and ‘far-fetched’ indicates a troubling trend where the EFCC appears to cater to political figures,” he said.

The coalition also raised concerns about Wike’s previous actions in Rivers State, claiming he undermined the police, judiciary, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and warned that similar tendencies are now emerging at the national level. CNG urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to remain vigilant against the alleged overreach, emphasizing that unchecked abuse of power could tarnish the administration’s integrity and destabilize democratic processes.

CNG further cautioned Nigerians to remain alert and actively defend democratic norms and electoral integrity. Charanchi stressed that political accountability must be applied equally to all leaders, warning against selective persecution. He called on the EFCC to strictly focus on its mandate of combating financial crimes and avoid being influenced by political pressures.

The coalition concluded by urging civil society, political parties, and citizens to resist intimidation and suppression tactics that threaten democratic ideals. “Together, we can ensure the voices of the people are heard and respected, safeguarding the foundations of democracy in Nigeria,” Charanchi said.
