The Northern Senators Forum has voiced a strong call to action for the Federal Government to address severe power outages affecting Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa states. The Forum’s Chairman, Senator Abdulaziz Yar’adua, emphasized the urgency of intervention, citing the negative impacts on local businesses, healthcare systems, and residents who now face increased fuel costs as they rely on alternative energy sources.

The outages are reportedly due to both vandalism and disruptions in the national grid, leading to heightened economic and social strain. To remedy the situation, the Forum proposed an expedited repair of the Shiroro-Kaduna transmission lines and strengthened security around power infrastructure to prevent further vandalism. Additionally, the Forum suggested supporting sustainable energy initiatives like renewable sources and mini-grids, particularly those already proposed by the Kano Electricity Distribution Company.

Despite recent progress in power distribution, Yar’adua reiterated that the current situation demands urgent federal attention to alleviate hardships and stimulate economic recovery. The Forum remains committed to pushing for policies that protect the welfare of northern communities, with a focus on securing stable power for economic stability and quality of life in the region.
