Peter Obi has strongly condemned the move by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to increase the salaries of President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, governors, lawmakers, and other political office holders.
Obi branded the proposal “shameless, reckless, and greedy,” insisting it reflects deep insensitivity to the plight of ordinary Nigerians.
With inflation soaring and millions of citizens trapped in poverty, Obi described the planned hike as scandalous and unjustifiable.
He stressed that political leadership should be about service, not self-enrichment, warning that the proposed 100% increase exposes the greed of the ruling class.
Obi noted that while politicians push for bigger pay, essential workers such as police officers and civil servants remain grossly underpaid despite carrying heavier burdens.
He urged the government to redirect resources toward improving welfare for struggling Nigerians rather than inflating the earnings of already privileged office holders.
Obi’s remarks add to mounting public criticism of the salary proposal, which many view as a betrayal of trust at a time of economic hardship. For him, the measure highlights a political class “out of touch with the realities of the people they claim to serve
