Nigerian businessman and Chairman of Cubana Group, Obinna Iyiegbu, popularly known as Obi Cubana, has clarified his recent comments on the Igbo community following public backlash, stating that his remarks were misinterpreted.

Mr Iyiegbu spoke on Monday, during an interview with BBC Igbo, where he reaffirmed his commitment to unity and development in the Southeast.

“My speech was perhaps deliberately misunderstood. I did not intend to insult Ndigbo. I spoke out of concern and a desire for progress,” Mr Iyiegbu said.

The controversy followed remarks made at a City Boy Movement event where Mr Iyiegbu emphasised the need for southeasterners to support national political engagement, including backing President Bola Tinubu.

Mr Iyiegbu explained that his earlier speech at a political event in Enugu was taken out of context after being reduced to a short clip circulated online.

He maintained that his intention was not to insult the Igbo people but to encourage civic participation and strategic engagement in national politics.

He added that his message was aimed at promoting patience, political awareness, and inclusion in governance processes.

His comments triggered criticism from some quarters, with critics accusing him of undermining regional sentiments.

Call for civic participation

Mr Iyiegbu stressed that citizens in a democracy must be free to support candidates of their choice without intimidation, urging greater political involvement from the Southeast.

He cautioned against what he described as “mob mentality,” where selective narratives are amplified to create tension and division within the community.

City Boy Movement Activities

Highlighting recent engagements, including an event in Owerri, he noted that the group’s activities have remained peaceful, promoting dialogue rather than conflict.

The remarks come amid heightened political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, with increased advocacy for regional participation in national governance.

Public figures have increasingly faced scrutiny over political statements, especially those perceived to touch on ethnic or regional sensitivities.

Mr Iyiegbu’s clarification is expected to calm tensions among stakeholders within the Igbo community and beyond.
