In a fiery address following the Supreme Court verdict, Labour Party National Chairman Julius Abure has warned that there is “no vacancy” in the party’s leadershipsubtly accusing 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti of betrayal.
Abure, speaking at the party’s secretariat on Monday ahead of the National Executive Committee meeting, insisted that the apex court reaffirmed party supremacy and internal autonomy. He lashed out at those suggesting a leadership change, calling them misled and reaffirming his authority.
“Tell them there is no vacancy in our party,” Abure stated. “In the Labour Party, we don’t betray our candidates, even though some betray us after we give them tickets.”
He rejected the notion of a caretaker committee, emphasizing that the party’s constitution doesn’t allow such a structure. The statement comes amid deepening cracks within the Labour Party, with parallel meetings and reports of Obi considering a move to the SDP stirring controversy across political circles.
