Obi, Tinubu, Atiku Mourn as El-Rufai Loses Mother at 100

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has expressed condolences to Nasir El-Rufai following the death of his mother, Umma El-Rufai, who passed away in Cairo, Egypt, after a brief illness.

She was reportedly about 100 years old.

In a statement, Obi described the loss as a deeply painful moment for the family, noting the significance of a mother’s passing.

“The loss of a mother is a profound turning point in anyone’s life… My deepest sympathies go to Mallam Nasir El-Rufai and the entire family,” he said, praying for her soul to rest in Aljannatul Firdaus.

The passing was earlier announced by her grandson, Bello El-Rufai, who called for prayers and reflected on her long life and legacy.

Temporary Bail for Funeral Rites

Following her death, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) granted Mr El-Rufai temporary bail to enable him participate in the burial rites.

His son, Bashir El-Rufai, confirmed his release.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani also sent condolences, highlighting her impact as a respected matriarch.

Background 

The late Umma El-Rufai died in Cairo, where she had been receiving medical care.

Her death comes shortly after the passing of her daughter-in-law, marking a difficult period for the El-Rufai family.
