The Anambra State Government had previously banned illegal sand mining and other unauthorized mining activities, mandating that operators obtain proper approvals and certifications. The move aimed to prevent the environmental degradation and loss of lives and property caused by unregulated mining.
Speaking to journalists at the site, OCHA Brigade Managing Director, Comrade Celestine Anere, described the suspectsโ actions as economic sabotage, a security threat, and a serious environmental hazard.
During the operation, the agency also impounded several trucks used by the miners, who were allegedly excavating sand from beneath the Onitsha Bridgeheadโa practice that poses a significant risk to the bridgeโs structural integrity.
Authorities have documented the arrested individuals, and necessary legal actions are being taken to ensure they face appropriate consequences.
