The Anambra State Government had previously banned illegal sand mining and other unauthorized mining activities, mandating that operators obtain proper approvals and certifications. The move aimed to prevent the environmental degradation and loss of lives and property caused by unregulated mining.
Speaking to journalists at the site, OCHA Brigade Managing Director, Comrade Celestine Anere, described the suspects’ actions as economic sabotage, a security threat, and a serious environmental hazard.
During the operation, the agency also impounded several trucks used by the miners, who were allegedly excavating sand from beneath the Onitsha Bridgehead—a practice that poses a significant risk to the bridge’s structural integrity.
