Odimegwu Meets Members of Scrap Dealers and Scavengers; Intensifies Registration Exercise

 

Anambra State Government through the Ministry of Environment have called for intensified efforts in the registration of scrap dealers and their members in the state.

The Commissioner of Environment, Engr Felix Odimegwu while addressing a group of scrap dealers and scavengers during the ongoing registration exercise, reiterated that the aim of the registration was to bring sanity, coordination and legality in the sector. He made it known to all that the Soludo-led government will not condone any criminality and illegality again in the sector.

Dr Odimegwu also gave details on the intention of Soludo led administration to halt criminality in the state, which majority of scavengers/Ndi akpakara/iron condemn were suspects.

The Proactive Commissioner urged everyone out there that is in the business of scrap/scavenging to come forward and register his/her business. He also stressed that the Enforcement team from the Ministry will commence inspection and sealing of unregistered scrap pit from third week of November

Chief Emmanuel Okorondu who operates scrap business with 20 scrap dealers/scavengers under him said that the initiative was a welcome development that should be applauded. He noted that the need to organize the sector was very crucial as criminality and illegality in the business had given the genuine ones a bad name.

In the same vein, Falalu muktar, a scrap dealer from hausa quarters, Amawbia, opined that the process will help stabilize the irregularities in their business. He stressed that the risk associated with street scavenging is alarming, that he can’t wait for them to have specific scrap pit where all registered members will be carrying out the sorting process

Also present in the meeting/registration process were; Ministry of Environment Perm. Secretary, Mr Tochukwu Obodogha, HOD EHPC, Mrs Oluchi Nwankwu among others.
