He explained that several jets in the presidential fleet, dating back to the tenure of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, are in poor condition and have become increasingly costly to maintain. As an alternative to constant, high-cost repairs, the President sought National Assembly approval to purchase a refurbished Airbus A330 in good working order, emphasizing cost savings on maintenance.
Onanuga also highlighted a recent incident where President Tinubu’s jet encountered technical issues on a trip to Saudi Arabia, requiring a chartered flight to the Netherlands. He underscored that this refurbished jet is meant to ensure the President’s safety, not only for his term but also for future officeholders.
Despite the Presidency’s rationale for the acquisition, critics argue the move is insensitive to Nigerians facing record-high inflation and energy costs.
