The Ondo State chapter of the Western Nigeria Security Network, codenamed Amotekun Corps, has successfully foiled five separate kidnap attempts within the past two weeks.
The State Commander of Amotekun, Mr. Adetunji Adeleye, disclosed this on Wednesday in Akure while briefing journalists on the corps’ recent security operations.
According to Adeleye, the most recent incident occurred on Monday when a traditional chief from a community near Akure was abducted. Acting swiftly on a distress call, Amotekun personnel, in collaboration with local hunters, launched an overnight pursuit that led to the rescue of the chief and an accompanying motorcycle rider—without any ransom paid.
“In that operation, we were able to retrieve the chief and the Okada rider that were kidnapped. No ransom was paid,” Adeleye said.
He further revealed that in the Akoko area of the state, armed kidnappers attacked farmlands, raped women, and abducted several residents along Ajegunle Road between 1:00 a.m. and 2:00 a.m. Within 48 hours, all victims were safely rescued, and three suspects were arrested.
“We have the suspects and the victims here today. The suspects have been identified as part of the gang,” he added.
Adeleye also reported a similar success in the Central Senatorial District, where more kidnap suspects were apprehended and identified by their victims.
Overall, the corps arrested 17 suspects during the two-week period. Of these, eight were involved in various acts of civil disorder, three were arrested for kidnapping, while six were linked to robbery and rape.
The Amotekun commander reaffirmed the corps’ commitment to working alongside other security agencies to maintain peace across Ondo State. He also noted a significant decline in farmer-herder clashes, attributing the progress to increased vigilance and community cooperation.
Adeleye called on residents to continue supporting the corps with timely information, stressing the importance of community involvement in sustaining security gains.
