The Delta State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Community Support Services, and Girl Child Development, Orode Uduaghan, has weighed in on the controversial suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan by the Nigerian Senate.
Orode, who is the daughter of former Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, took to her Instagram stories on Thursday, March 5, to subtly express her thoughts on the matter. In a cryptic post, she hinted at sharing her personal experiences as a woman navigating the murky waters of Nigerian politics.
International Women’s Month. Lol, the mother of two wrote, seemingly mocking the irony of celebrating women’s achievements while one of them faces political sanctions.
Her post comes in the wake of a widely criticized remark by former Cross River State House of Assembly member, Cletus Obun, who suggested that women seeking political offices may need to undergo mental stability tests before being allowed to serve as governors, senators, or councilors.
Orode shared a clip of Obun’s statement on her Instagram and captioned it with a telling remark: #WomenInPolitics. One day I will set a ring light and microphone, suggesting she may soon speak out against the systemic challenges women face in Nigerian politics.
The controversy stems from the six-month suspension of PDP lawmaker Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, following allegations of sexual harassment she made against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. A Senate disciplinary committee found her guilty of breaching the chamber’s rules, a move that has sparked debates on whether her punishment was politically motivated or a genuine enforcement of Senate regulations.
As the fallout continues, many are watching to see if Orode Uduaghan will finally break her silence and expose the behind-the-scenes struggles of women in Nigerian politics.
