Viral videos showing groups of men assaulting women in broad daylight during a community festival in Ozoro have sparked widespread condemnation and a police investigation in Delta State.

The incident, which occurred on Thursday,  has drawn national outrage against what some are calling a harmful “festival” that allegedly targets women who appear in public.

“This is alarming, disgusting and embarrassing… no custom or tradition is superior to the rights of citizens,” said the Delta State Police Command spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, as officers launched a full investigation.

Disturbing scenes captured on video

Footage circulating widely on social media shows groups of young men reportedly chasing women seen on the streets, tearing their clothes and subjecting them to physical assault and molestation.

In some clips, victims are heard crying for help as attackers overwhelm them. In one video, a male voice reportedly says any woman who steps outside during the event risks being raped.

Although some reports describe the event as an annual local festival in which women are expected to stay indoors, and victims who fail to do so become targets, authorities have not confirmed that characterization as an official cultural practice.

Some social media posts and eyewitness accounts allege that several women may have been raped, though these allegations have not yet been officially verified by police.

Official response and investigation

The Delta State Police Command has condemned the alleged assaults and said arrests are underway.

Spokesperson Bright Edafe confirmed that the Commissioner of Police has ordered an intensive investigation and called on witnesses with useful information to assist in identifying suspects.

Government condemnation

The Delta State Government also denounced the attacks, describing them as “barbaric and unacceptable” acts with no place in society, and directed security agencies to apprehend those responsible.

Officials emphasized that no festival or tradition should be used as a cover for criminal behaviour that violates the dignity and rights of women.

Public reaction

Online reactions have ranged from shock to anger, with many Nigerians urging swift justice for victims and stronger protections for women. Some social media users have adopted hashtags calling for an end to gender‑based violence and immediate action by authorities.
