The Dutse Emirate Development Association (DEDA) has expressed grief over the death of Nigerian Army officer Faruk Umar Usman, who was killed during counter-terrorism operations in Borno State.

In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by its Public Relations Officer II, Muhammad Musbahu Basirka, the association described the late Lieutenant Colonel Faruk Umar Usman, an indigene of Birnin Kudu in Jigawa State, as a courageous officer who paid the supreme price while defending Nigeria against insurgent groups operating in the North East.

DEDA said the officer was killed in the line of duty during ongoing military operations targeting terrorists affiliated with Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

“The gallant officer paid the supreme price while defending the nation against terrorists in Borno State. His death is a painful loss not only to his family and the Nigerian Armed Forces but also to the people of Jigawa State, Dutse Emirate and the nation at large,” the statement said.

The association described the late officer as widely respected by both soldiers and civilians for his courage, discipline and compassion.

“Communities across the North East consistently commended his commitment and bravery in protecting them from repeated terrorist attacks,” DEDA said.

According to the group, residents living under constant threat of insurgency saw the officer as more than a military commander.

“For many residents who lived under the constant threat of insurgency, he was more than a military commander; he was a symbol of hope and security,” the statement added.

The association also highlighted his humanitarian contributions, noting that he used personal resources to support displaced civilians and assist colleagues in need.

“His humility and selfless service earned him admiration wherever he served,” DEDA stated, adding that his death during the holy month of Ramadan reflects the depth of his sacrifice in service to the nation.

DEDA extended condolences to the late officer’s family, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the government and people of Jigawa State led by Governor Umar Namadi, as well as the people of Birnin Kudu and the Muslim community.

The group also urged the Jigawa State Government to honour and immortalise the fallen officer in recognition of his service and sacrifice to the nation.
