The Pakistani High Commissioner to Nigeria, retired Maj.-Gen. Sohail Khan, has reaffirmed his country’s role as a dependable ally in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and a significant contributor to global peace.
Khan made the remarks on Monday night in Abuja during an event organised by the High Commission to celebrate Pakistan’s National Day and Defence Day. Although traditionally marked on August 14, the event was moved to September to coincide with Defence Day celebrations.
Highlighting Pakistan’s global contributions, the envoy said the country has remained an active voice in international forums, advocating for justice in regions such as Kashmir and Palestine. He also noted Pakistan’s long-standing commitment to United Nations peacekeeping operations, with more than 200,000 troops deployed since 1960.
“Pakistan is a key player in international forums, a reliable partner in counter-terrorism efforts, and a voice for justice. Our contributions to peacekeeping missions underscore our commitment to global stability,” Khan said.
The high commissioner also underscored Pakistan’s achievements in agriculture, industry, and natural endowment, noting that the country ranks among the world’s top producers of cotton, rice, sugarcane, wheat, and fruits such as mangoes, dates, and oranges. He added that Pakistan remains a leading global supplier of sports goods and is home to breathtaking natural landmarks, including K2, the world’s second-highest peak.

Paying tribute to Pakistan’s armed forces, ranked 12th in the 2025 Global Firepower Index, Khan commended their courage and sacrifices in the global fight against terrorism. He revealed that over 80,000 Pakistani military personnel had laid down their lives in the pursuit of peace and security.
Speaking on bilateral ties, Khan described relations between Nigeria and Pakistan as long-standing and deeply rooted in brotherhood, trust, and strategic cooperation. He stressed that both countries continue to deepen collaboration in trade, defence, and security across all services.
“As we commemorate our Independence and Defence Day, let us renew our commitment to building a stronger Pakistan – one that leads in innovation, peace, and prosperity. Together, we are unbreakable,” Khan concluded.
