PDP Chairmen Shut Down Plot to Undermine Party Before 2027

Barely a week to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national convention in Ibadan, state chairmen of the party have expressed full confidence in Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, reaffirming their support for his leadership and direction.

The meeting, held at the Oyo State Lodge in Abuja under the banner of the Forum of PDP State Chairmen, was led by Edo State Chairman Hon. Tony Aziegbemi and attended by Governor Makinde alongside state party leaders.

Although officially described as a ‘courtesy visit,’ sources said the gathering was a strategic show of solidarity, aimed at strengthening alliances ahead of the convention scheduled for November 15–16, 2025.

“This fight you see within the PDP isn’t just an internal disagreement; it’s a battle between darkness and light. What those people want is to cripple the PDP and hand the APC a free ride in 2027. But that plan will not succeed,” Aziegbemi declared.

The PDP is currently divided between the Makinde-led bloc and the faction aligned with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, which has raised disputes over key decisions, including the recognition of zonal committees, the status of expelled officials, and state congresses in Anambra, Ebonyi, and other states. At the center of the conflict is also the legitimacy of Ambassador Umar Damagum’s tenure as National Chairman following suspension by the Wike faction.

State chairmen framed their visit as both an appreciation tour for Makinde’s stabilising role and a symbolic show of loyalty to his bloc, now widely regarded as the party’s dominant power centre.

Despite their firm support, Aziegbemi emphasised reconciliation, particularly toward suspended chairmen from Imo and Abia States, affirming alignment with the Board of Trustees reconciliation drive led by Senator Adolphus Wabara:

“The door to reconciliation can never be closed. Those guys are our friends, our brothers. We will continue to see them as such.”

Party insiders said the chairmen’s show of support aims to strengthen unity and present a credible opposition frontahead of 2027, framing internal disputes as part of a larger struggle to defend the party against forces seeking to weaken it.

“We are with the governors and the National Working Committee to stand on the right side of history. The evil plans of those who want this country to remain where it is will never succeed,” Aziegbemi added.

Whether this renewed optimism will translate into real party stability remains uncertain, but the PDP’s state chairmen have drawn a clear line, positioning themselves as defenders of the party ahead of the next general elections.
