The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned the assassination attempt on its Anambra governorship candidate, Chief Jude Ezenwafor, ahead of the November 8 election. The party is calling for the immediate arrest of the attackers and those behind the plot.
In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by its National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the PDP described the attack as a dangerous escalation of political violence and a threat to democracy in the country.
According to reports, Ezenwafor was ambushed by unknown gunmen in Abuja while returning from an appointment. The attackers reportedly opened fire on his vehicle before fleeing the scene.
Ologunagba urged the Inspector General of Police to ensure the immediate arrest of the assailants and their sponsors, and to strengthen security around the PDP candidate as the election approaches.
“The party has carefully analyzed the incident and believes that it was orchestrated by elements uncomfortable with the growing popularity of Chief Ezenwafor in the lead-up to the election,” the statement said.
The PDP also revealed it has received intelligence about further plots to launch smear campaigns against Ezenwafor, following the failure of the assassination attempt.
Describing the attack as a “sad commentary on the state of insecurity in Nigeria,” Ologunagba declared that the PDP and its supporters will not be intimidated.
“Our message to the attackers and their sponsors is simple: you have failed, and you will continue to fail. Chief Ezenwafor is divinely destined to lead. He enjoys the overwhelming support of the people and will emerge victorious in the forthcoming election.”
Ologunagba encouraged Ezenwafor to remain undeterred by the attack, reaffirming that Anambra State remains a stronghold of the PDP.
“No amount of violence, propaganda, or intimidation will shake our resolve or that of the Anambra people to elect a transparent, people-focused, and accountable government under the banner of the PDP,” he added.
