Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have overturned the suspension of the party’s acting National Chairman, Illiya Damagum, as well as the suspensions of National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, and National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, SAN.
This decision was announced on Tuesday by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, who also serves as the Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum. Speaking to journalists before departing for a “crucial assignment” in Ondo State, Mohammed confirmed that the status quo remains in place within the party’s leadership structure for now.
PDP Leadership Crisis
The PDP has recently been embroiled in a crisis, with factions within the National Working Committee (NWC) taking steps to suspend key leaders. Amid the rift, Yayari Mohammed was named as Damagum’s replacement during the turmoil, further deepening internal tensions.
In his remarks, Governor Mohammed expressed concern over the infighting within the NWC, saying it has weakened the PDP’s effectiveness as an opposition party. “Personal and political interests among some leaders have been elevated above the party’s agenda, affecting its ability to perform at the national level,” he said.
Vision to Revamp the Party
In a statement issued earlier, Damagum reiterated the need to reignite the hopes and aspirations of party members. He emphasized the importance of returning the PDP to its role as a robust opposition capable of promoting responsive governance and democratic development in Nigeria.
“The PDP must perform its role as expected by Nigerians, who remember the ‘golden years’ of governance during our 16 years in power,” Damagum said. He noted that the NWC’s focus is on revamping the party in line with the vision of its founding fathers.
“The National Working Committee appointed me on October 10, 2024, to lead efforts to rekindle the hope of our members—especially the youth and critical stakeholders—who expect the PDP to be a platform that drives progress and holds the government accountable,” he added.
Call for Unity
Governor Mohammed reaffirmed the party’s commitment to resolving internal conflicts and called on all members to set aside personal interests in favor of the party’s broader goals. He stressed that unity within the PDP is essential for it to fulfill its mandate as a credible opposition and regain public trust.
