Legal practitioner and political analyst, Barrister Darlington, has taken a strong swipe at former Rivers State Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over his continued defiance of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), insisting that Wike owes his political rise and achievements to the party.
In a statement addressing the growing internal tensions within the PDP, Darlington argued that Wike’s development projects and political influence in Rivers State were made possible by the support, resources, and structure of the PDP — not through personal wealth or independent political strength, as Wike often portrays.
“Let’s not rewrite history,” Darlington said. “The truth is, PDP made Wike. From his time as Chief of Staff, to his appointment as Minister under the Jonathan administration, and later as Governor of Rivers State — all of that happened under the PDP banner, not on his own merit or with his personal funds.”
He further noted that the infrastructural achievements Wike often boasts about were funded by public resources facilitated through PDP-led governance structures.
“Every road, flyover, or project he points to in Rivers State was financed with public money, approved by PDP leadership, and executed within the framework of a party-led government. Wike didn’t use his own money. He used government funds — PDP funds. That fact must be acknowledged.”
Darlington criticized what he described as Wike’s arrogance and open defiance of party authority, recalling how the former governor once boasted that no one within the PDP could expel him.
“Those words alone should have triggered disciplinary action at the time. But the party hesitated, and now, any attempt to expel him is too late and would be ineffective,” he said.
According to Darlington, Wike’s current boldness stems from the backing he allegedly enjoys from powerful figures within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), including his “master in Abuja,” a reference believed to be aimed at President Bola Tinubu.
“It’s no secret that Wike is aligned with forces at the federal level. That alliance has emboldened him to act above the party. Trying to sanction or expel him now would amount to chasing shadows — the pressure needed is simply not there anymore,” Darlington added.
He called on the PDP leadership to learn from this experience and reinforce internal discipline and loyalty going forward.
“The party must protect its integrity. It must stand for something. Otherwise, individuals will continue to hijack its platform for personal gain and later turn against it when it no longer serves their ambitions.”
Darlington concluded by urging party stakeholders and supporters not to be discouraged but to rebuild the PDP based on collective values and unity of purpose.
