Peter Obi commits to education healthcare at nursing college

Benin City, July 8, 2025

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi reaffirmed his dedication to Nigeria’s development through investments in healthcare and education during a visit to St. Philomena Hospital School of Nursing Sciences in Benin City on Monday. Obi donated ₦15 million to support the completion of an ongoing building project at the institution, emphasizing the critical role of nurses in healthcare and the need for robust educational systems.

“Healthcare and education are the most important investments for humanity,” Obi declared, highlighting that nurses are the backbone of medical care, being closest to patients. He predicted a global shortage of nurses by 2030 due to rising demand and urged governments and individuals to prioritize training and infrastructure. Obi, who visits over 50 nursing schools and hospitals annually, stated, “Every week, I support health facilities and schools because they are key to pulling people out of poverty.”

The donation was warmly received by the school’s provost, Father Jerome Idebe, who praised Obi’s consistent support, noting a similar contribution in 2024. The funds will enhance the college’s capacity to train healthcare professionals, addressing Nigeria’s pressing needs.

Obi’s actions underscore his broader vision for national progress, focusing on human capital development. His commitment resonates with many Nigerians amid ongoing economic challenges, positioning him as a leading advocate for systemic change.
