The Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Mr. Peter Obi, has donated ₦20 million to support the ongoing development of the Godfrey Okoye University (GOUNI) Teaching Hospital in Enugu.
Presenting the cheque on Tuesday at the hospital premises, Obi reiterated his commitment to strengthening healthcare and education in Nigeria. He highlighted the critical need for trained nurses, stating that the country requires over 1.2 million nurses to meet its healthcare demands.
“The world is projected to face a shortage of over 30 million nurses by 2030 if urgent attention is not given to the profession. Nigeria already faces a deficit of over 1.2 million nurses. This is why institutions like this are vital, and your studies should be taken seriously—you are answering a global call,” Obi told the nursing students present.
He expressed concern over the declining state of community hospitals in Nigeria, attributing their dysfunction largely to a lack of qualified healthcare personnel. Obi also referenced recent global and national reports, including a World Bank study indicating worsening poverty in Nigeria and a UNICEF report showing the country has overtaken India in infant mortality rates.
“These alarming statistics are the result of failed governance and the mismanagement of our national resources,” he said. “My contributions are not about politics; they are about building a better Nigeria.”
Obi pledged ongoing support for the project and commended faith-based institutions for their role in social development.
“Every month, I commit to supporting a vital institution. I thank GOUNI and the Church for their efforts, and I assure you this visit marks the beginning of continued collaboration.”
In his remarks, the Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Callistus Onaga, praised Obi for his consistent compassion toward the underprivileged.
“We are grateful for your presence and your actions. Your work with hospitals and humanitarian causes is widely recognized. May your vision for Nigeria become a reality,” Onaga said.
The Vice-Chancellor of Godfrey Okoye University, Prof. Christian Anieke, also acknowledged Obi’s longstanding support for the institution, dating back to his tenure as Governor of Anambra State.
“You have not only donated, but you have also engaged intellectually by attending our lecture series. GOUNI will ensure that your generosity is honoured with appropriate academic recognition. We are with you and will continue to support you with our prayers,” he stated.
