The Anambra State Police Command has arrested four suspected members of a criminal gang specialising in snatching tricycles, phones, and other valuables in Awka.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday in Awka.
Ikenga said the suspects, aged between 19 and 21, were arrested in the early hours of Monday by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Akwuzu, during a night patrol along the Agu-Awka/Ifite-Awka axis.
โThe four-man syndicate specialises in robbing unsuspecting residents, particularly students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, of their phones and valuables,โ Ikenga said.
Recovered exhibits include nine mobile phones, including an iPhone belonging to a victim, one laptop, two tricycles with registration numbers LSD 464 QP and BLF 552 VH, four different tricycle number plates, and a substance suspected to be hard drugs.
The suspects reportedly confessed to belonging to a syndicate targeting students in Awka. According to police, the multiple tricycle plates were used to disguise their operational vehicles during robberies.
Ikenga added that the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, commended the operatives for their swift response. He also warned youths against involvement in crime, stressing that the command would ensure that offenders face the full weight of the law.
