The Lagos State Police Command has detained a driver following a fatal accident that claimed the life of a Lagos State University student in Igando.
The command confirmed the development in a statement shared on its official X handle on Saturday night, noting that an investigation into the incident has commenced.
According to the police, officers from the Igando Division responded promptly after the accident was reported.
“The corpse has been deposited at the mortuary, while the driver involved is in police custody. The vehicle has also been impounded for further investigation,” the statement read.
Authorities added that the case has been transferred to the Area Command for further handling.
Incident details
The victim, identified simply as Azeezat, was reportedly knocked down and killed by a vehicle around 7:00 pm in the Igando area of Lagos.
The tragic incident has sparked outrage among students and residents.
Student protest
Following the accident, students of Lagos State University were seen protesting at the Area M Police Division, demanding justice for the deceased.
In videos circulating on social media, the students accused police officers of attempting to shield the driver and cover up the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The police denied any wrongdoing, assuring the public that due process would be followed and that all necessary legal actions would be taken.
The command urged residents to remain calm as investigations continue.
