The Kebbi State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the reported attack on the convoy of former Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), in Birnin Kebbi.
The Voice of the People (VOP) gathered that the incident occurred on Monday as Malami’s convoy was returning from a condolence visit in the state capital.
Malami, who resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) on July 2 before joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC), was said to have been targeted by suspected political thugs.
Following an emergency security meeting convened by Governor Nasir Idris, the Commissioner of Police, Bello Sani, confirmed that no arrests had yet been made.
“We have commenced investigation into the attack, and no arrest has been made yet. The governor convened this meeting to review security developments,” Sani said.
He explained that the incident took place around the GRA area of Birnin Kebbi and was linked to rival political party supporters in violation of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) campaign regulations.
According to him, leaders of political parties will be invited and cautioned to ensure strict adherence to electoral guidelines, in order to avert further violence as elections approach.
The police commissioner urged all political leaders to remain calm, promote peace, and sustain stability in the state.
