El-Rufai Dumps APC in Fury, Joins SDP, Accuses Party of Betrayal and Contempt
In a shocking political twist former Kaduna State Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai has officially abandoned the All Progressives Congress (APC) accusing the ruling party of betraying its founding principles, suppressing internal democracy, and sidelining its own members.
In a statement released on Monday, March 10, 2025, El-Rufai slammed the APC leadership claiming the party had been hijacked by undemocratic forces who have castrated its organs and treated loyal members with contempt.
Developments in the last two years confirm that there is no desire on the part of those who currently control and run the APC to acknowledge, much less address, the unhealthy situation of the party,” he declared.
The former governor, once a key architect of APC’s electoral victories in 2015, 2019, and 2023, expressed deep frustration over being sidelined despite his contributions to the party’s success.
The APC has castrated its organs and treated its membership with contempt in the last two years. I find this no longer acceptable.”
Announcing his dramatic defection to the Social Democratic Party (SDP)**, El-Rufai declared the opposition platform a better vehicle for democratic values, good governance, and national unity.
I have now decided to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP)and adopt it as the platform for our future political engagements and activities.”
His defection marks a major political realignment ahead of Nigeria’s next general elections fueling speculation about a possible rebellion within APC’s ranks and a deeper crisis within the ruling party.
