The political crisis in Rivers State has escalated as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the state government have strongly rejected calls by a faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Governor Siminalayi Fubara to resign or face impeachment.
The APC faction, loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike has accused Fubara of gross incompetence disrespecting President Bola Tinubu and failing to implement a peace resolution. APC chieftain Tony Okocha led the charge, branding Fubara as clueless and insisting the only way forward is for him to resign or be removed from office.
The options before Siminalayi Joseph Fubara are two: he should honorably resign or be impeached because he has run the state aground and disrespected Mr. President.
Fubara, however, has dismissed the threats accusing his opponents of attempting to sabotage governance through politically motivated crises. In a defiant response he vowed to stay the course, urging his supporters to remain peaceful despite the growing tensions.
Please continue to follow my footsteps, and that footstep remains the path of peace. We need it because if anything happens, we are the greatest losers.
The crisis deepened after Fubara’s invitation to dialogue with the Martin Amaewhule-led House of Assembly was outrightly rejected by the APC faction, who mocked the governor’s approach as a Greek gift.
With tensions at a boiling point and the battle for political control intensifying Rivers State appears to be on the brink of a major showdown one that could define the future of Fubara’s administration and the state’s fragile political stability.
