The Rivers State Police Command has rescued a heavily pregnant woman from a suspected child trafficking syndicate operating between Rivers and Abia states.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the development during a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Tuesday. She disclosed that the suspects had been arrested following extensive investigations and intelligence gathering.
According to Iringe-Koko, on June 24, police detectives expanded their operations to Aba, Abia State, where they apprehended two individuals identified as 28-year-old Miss Sunshine Hart and 38-year-old Mr. Kingsley Ekocha.
During the raid on the suspects’ hideout, officers rescued a 24-year-old pregnant woman, Miss Regina Sunday. She was immediately placed under protective custody for her safety and well-being.
“On June 30, just days after her rescue, Regina delivered a healthy baby boy at the Police Clinic in Port Harcourt,” Iringe-Koko said. “Both mother and child are currently receiving medical attention and are in stable condition.”
The police spokesperson also revealed that efforts are underway to apprehend additional members of the trafficking ring. A manhunt has been launched to track down other suspects involved in the criminal network.
Reaffirming the command’s commitment to justice, Iringe-Koko quoted the Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, as saying that the police remain dedicated to protecting lives and property while upholding the rule of law.
She urged members of the public to support law enforcement by reporting any suspicious activity related to human trafficking.
“Together, we can eradicate this menace from our society,” she appealed.
