Protests Erupt in Abuja Over VeryDarkMan’s Arrest, Nigerians Demand Transparency

Protesters took to the streets of Abuja following the arrest of popular social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), sparking widespread public outrage and calls for his immediate release. VDM was reportedly detained after honoring a police invitation linked to allegations of impersonation. The controversy centers on a viral video in which he appeared wearing a police uniform without authorization—an act the Nigerian Police deem a criminal offense.  Although he issued a public apology, explaining he was unaware of the implications, authorities proceeded with legal action. Public frustration grew after it was revealed that the FCT police command claimed to be unaware of his arrest, further fueling concerns over transparency and due process. Adding to the complexity are renewed petitions reportedly filed by celebrities such as Tonto Dikeh, Iyabo Ojo, and Samklef—figures who had previously lodged complaints that were later dismissed As calls for his release intensify, many Nigerians are urging the authorities to uphold justice, ensure due process, and respect the rights of citizens to speak out without fear of persecution.
