Russian President Vladimir Putin has spoken with Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian, offering support for diplomatic efforts after failed talks between Iran and the United States.

According to the Kremlin, Mr Putin expressed readiness to assist in resolving the escalating Middle East crisis through political and diplomatic means.

“Vladimir Putin emphasised his readiness to further facilitate the search for a political and diplomatic settlement… and to mediate efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace,” the Kremlin said.

The call followed the collapse of negotiations between Iran and the United States aimed at ending hostilities linked to the broader regional conflict.

The diplomatic efforts come amid an ongoing conflict that began after joint US and Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, triggering retaliation from Tehran.

The crisis has since escalated into a broader Middle East confrontation, with global economic and security implications.

Talks breakdown

The high-level talks, which involved US officials including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, ended without a breakthrough after marathon discussions.

A US official confirmed that the delegation departed after failing to secure an agreement, despite initial expectations that negotiations might continue.

Iran’s position

Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Ghalibaf criticised the US for failing to build trust during the talks.

“My colleagues… put forward constructive initiatives, but the other side was unable to gain the trust of the Iranian delegation,” he said.

Global response

Despite the breakdown in talks, international leaders have continued to urge both sides to pursue dialogue and avoid further escalation.

Russia’s offer to mediate signals its intention to play a more active role in resolving the crisis.
