Reps Deputy Chief Whip Onanuga Dies at 59

Adewunmi Onanuga, the Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, has passed away. The lawmaker, who was born on December 2, 1965, died on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, after a brief illness. She was 59 years old.

Onanuga represented the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State and had been serving as the Deputy Chief Whip. Her death has sparked widespread mourning across the political landscape.

In a statement, the Green Chamber expressed deep sorrow over the sudden passing of the “passionate advocate,” noting her dedication to improving the lives of Nigerians, particularly women and her constituents.

Reps spokesman Akin Rotimi described Onanuga as a vibrant and impactful lawmaker. He recalled her unwavering commitment to creating a better society and her humility, intelligence, and drive for excellence. “She was affectionately known as ‘Ijaya,’ and her legacy will continue to inspire future generations,” Rotimi said.

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun also expressed sympathy, calling Onanuga’s passing a “monumental loss” to the state and Nigeria as a whole. He described her as a fearless leader and a great mobilizer who had made significant contributions to women’s empowerment and the well-being of her constituents.

Onanuga was first elected to the House in 2019 on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). During her tenure, she served as the Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development in the 9th Assembly, where she championed numerous initiatives aimed at social welfare. She was re-elected in 2023 and was appointed Deputy Chief Whip of the 10th Assembly.
