A group of retired police officers gathered in front of the National Assembly in Abuja on Monday to protest the non-payment of their pensions and benefits. Despite heavy rain, the former officers stood their ground, demanding that the government fulfill its promises.
Many of the retirees, some elderly and walking with the help of sticks, said they have waited for years to receive the money owed to them after serving the country. They shared stories of hardship, saying they are struggling to pay for basic needs like food, rent, and medical care.
“We served Nigeria with our lives. Now we are being forgotten,” one protester said.
The protest was peaceful, and the officers carried signs calling for justice and respect. They said they are not begging for help, but simply asking for what they were promised when they retired.
“We want the government to pay us what is rightfully ours,” another retired officer added.
Passersby showed support, and some civil society groups also expressed concern about how retired police officers are being treated. So far, lawmakers have not made an official statement, but the protesters say they will keep speaking out until something is done.
This protest is a reminder that those who spent their lives serving and protecting the nation should not be left to suffer in retirement.
