The Rivers State House of Assembly has officially launched impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Oduh, citing allegations of gross misconduct. The motion, read during a plenary session presided over by Speaker Martins Amaewhule and broadcast live on Channels Television, was signed by 26 lawmakers who claimed the duo violated the Nigerian Constitution.
Major Jack, the Majority Leader, outlined seven points of alleged misconduct against Governor Fubara, including unauthorized demolition of the Assembly Complex, extra-budgetary spending, withholding funds meant for the Assembly Service Commission, and defiance of the Supreme Court on financial autonomy for the House. The Speaker confirmed that the impeachment notice will be formally served to Fubara within seven days.
Similarly, Deputy Majority Leader Linda Stewart read allegations against Deputy Governor Oduh. Accusations include reckless spending, obstructing the Assembly from performing its constitutional duties, allowing unauthorized office occupancy, bypassing legitimate budgetary approval processes, and seizing salaries due to the Assembly and its Service Commission.
This marks the second attempt to remove Fubara and Oduh, following a similar effort in March 2025. The earlier impeachment attempt, triggered by a political fallout with former Governor Nyesom Wike, led President Bola Tinubu to declare a six-month state of emergency, suspending the governor, deputy, and Assembly. Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (ret.) was appointed as state administrator until Fubara returned to office after a reconciliation deal with Wike and lawmakers.
In a notable political shift, Fubara defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in December 2025, citing alignment with the presidentโs agenda. Several Assembly members had previously followed him to the APC, deepening political divisions in the oil-rich state and setting the stage for the current impeachment proceedings.
