Roadmap Unveiled to Address Jigawa Farmers

Stakeholders in Jigawa State have launched a renewed push for peace following a surge in farmer-herder clashes that have claimed lives and destroyed farmland across several local government areas. The move comes as communities continue to grapple with the fallout from recent violence reported in Kirikasamma, Maigatari, Taura, Birnin Kudu, Guri, and Jahun.

Tensions escalated most recently on December 7, 2025, when a clash in Yelwan Musari village, Guri Local Government Area, left two farmers dead and several others injured, including a police officer. The recurring violence has heightened concerns over food security, safety, and social cohesion in the agrarian state.

In response, the Jigawa State chapter of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) convened a one-day stakeholders’ engagement seminar on Wednesday at Sir Ahmadu Bello Hall, Dutse, bringing together farmers, herders, security agencies, traditional leaders, and civil society groups. AFAN Chairman, Engr. Auwalu Garba, said the meeting was designed to foster dialogue, identify challenges, and develop lasting solutions to restore peace across the state’s 27 local government areas.

A roadmap presented by Prof. Ado Jangargari, who moderated the session, emphasised enlightenment on grazing reserves, forest reserves, and cattle routes, alongside proactive law enforcement and the adoption of modern livestock management systems. He identified key challenges fueling the conflict, including encroachment on grazing lands, poor public awareness, weak enforcement by security agencies, and the improper allocation of grazing reserves.

Participants, including representatives of Miyetti Allah and farmers’ associations, urged security operatives to enforce the law impartially and punish offenders to deter further violence. The seminar drew wide participation from groups such as Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, Fulbe Awareness and Peace Orientation Association, and security and media stakeholders, with attendees expressing cautious optimism that sustained dialogue could pave the way for lasting peace and stability in Jigawa State.
