SAMBO DISMISSES EX-MINISTER’S CLAIMS ON POWER PRIVATISATION

Former Vice President Namadi Sambo has described as false, mischievous, and hypocritical the claims by a former Minister of Budget and National Planning, Dr. Shamsudeen Usman, on the 2013 power sector privatisation.

Usman had alleged at a recent event in Abuja that

the 2013 privatisation process was driven by political interests rather than buyers’ technical and financial capabilities.

He further claimed, among others, that political figures and officials in the President Goodluck Jonathan administration scrambled for stakes in the privatised power companies.

Refuting the claims, however, Sambo said in a statement by his Personal Secretary, Yinka Ibrahim, that they were merely intended to tarnish Dr. Jonathan’s administration and the National Council on Privatisation.

According to Sambo, who was the chairman of the National Council on Privatisation and supervised the sale of the power sector to distribution and generating companies, Usman’s claims were baseless, utterly ridiculous and a complete falsehood. He said he was not aware of any decision that compromised the integrity of the process.

He stressed that the privatisation process was transparent, with anti-corruption agencies such as the Economic and Financial Crime Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission included as statutory members of the council.
