Security Issues | Peter Obi Commends Northern Traditional Rulers for Stance on Renewed Killings

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate for the Labour Party (LP), has praised the northern traditional rulers for their bold stance against the resurgence of killings and insecurity in various parts of the region. His comments came after the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council held its 7th Executive Committee Meeting in Maiduguri, Borno State, on Tuesday.

During the closed-door meeting, the traditional rulers addressed the growing security challenges facing the northern region and the nation at large. The gathering provided a platform for over 86 monarchs from across the North to come together and speak with one voice on the critical issue of escalating violence, particularly the senseless killing of innocent civilians.

In his remarks following the meeting, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, emphasized the importance of unity among the region’s traditional rulers. He noted that the joint effort would allow them to raise their collective voice and call for urgent action to address the rampant killings that have continued to disrupt the lives of many people in the North and across the entire country.

Obi commended the traditional rulers for their leadership in confronting the security crisis, stating that their intervention is a crucial step towards bringing the issue to national attention. He reiterated the need for a unified approach to combatting insecurity, stressing that traditional rulers play a key role in guiding their communities and influencing positive change.

The ongoing violence, including attacks by bandits and insurgents, has led to significant loss of life and displacement in several northern states. The remarks from the traditional rulers reflect growing concern over the impact of insecurity on communities and the urgent need for a concerted response from both the government and civil society.

Peter Obi’s support for the traditional rulers’ stance highlights his ongoing commitment to addressing security challenges and promoting peace and stability throughout the country.
