Nigeria has stressed the urgent need to transform the ECOWAS Standby Force into a fully operational mechanism for regional peace and stability.
The call was made by Major General Umar Abubakar, Director of Peacekeeping and Regional Security at the Ministry of Defence, during a Governmental Experts’ Validation Meeting in Abuja.
The meeting brought together technical experts and strategic partners to finalise and validate the ECOWAS Standby Force Training Policy for Peace Support Operations.
In a keynote address, ECOWAS Acting Head of Peace Support Operations Division, Sani Adamu, emphasized the vision behind the policy and its significance in today’s complex security environment.
Adamu noted that the policy goes beyond being a mere document describing it as a comprehensive framework that integrates human rights, gender inclusion, civilian protection, and post-conflict recovery.
