Security operatives impose lockdown in Uromi following killings of Northerners

Security forces have been deployed to key locations in Uromi, the administrative center of Esan North East Local Government Area in Edo State, over the violent mob attack last Thursday, resulting to the deaths of 16 travelers from northern Nigeria.

Troops were deployed by the authorities to stop possible revenge attacks, as residents of the area now live in fear of retaliation.

During a visit to the area,  it was observed that resident now hesitate to speak about the incident with outsiders, following the arrest of at least 14 individuals with many reportedly detained indiscriminately over suspected ties to the attack.

While condemning the mob violence, some residents suggested the rampant kidnappings in Edo Central and nearby regions may have provoked the attackers. Still, they acknowledged that such lawlessness cannot be justified.

Going further, military vehicles were seen patrolling near the highway and known trouble spots in the town to track people’s movements and maintain control. The presence of undercover security officers has also made residents more wary of unfamiliar people.

Moses Yamu, Edo State Police Public Relations Officer when contacted said, Force Headquarters had taken over the matter but noted that the command has deployed more men to ensure there was no breakdown of law and order.

He said, “The Force Headquarters has taken over the investigation, so it is no longer in our hands. I cannot therefore, say how far the investigation has gone. But our men are still on ground to ensure that there is no breakdown of law and order.”

Despite efforts by the Governor, Monday Okpebholo to salvage the situation with the suspension of the security chief in charge of vigilante, and his subsequent condolence visit to families of the victims and the government of Kano State, people in Uromi still nurse fears of retaliation.

The uncertainty of when or how retaliatory attacks might occur has left residents in a state of constant fear and heightened alert.
