The Senate has initiated an investigation into false reports regarding a supposed plan to impeach Senate President Godswill Akpabio, categorizing the rumors as fake news. During a recent plenary session, the Senate referred the matter to its Committee on Special Duties to trace the origin of these misleading claims.
Akpabio addressed the circulating rumors, which suggested that the Department of State Security had taken control of the National Assembly due to impending impeachment actions. He described the Senate’s ongoing work as peaceful and expressed disbelief at the misinformation being propagated.
“This kind of falsehood is part of what we face daily,” he stated, indicating that AI may be involved in spreading such stories to generate online traffic and revenue. He reassured the public of the Senate’s stability, asserting that impeachment discussions were baseless.
Shehu Kaka, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Special Duties, committed to investigating the issue. The Senate also clarified that there was no unusual security presence at the National Assembly, further dispelling media reports. This incident is not the first time rumors of Akpabio’s impeachment have emerged.
