A serving senator has expressed concern over what he described as the increasing presence of poorly prepared individuals in political leadership positions across Nigeria, warning that holding office should not be mistaken for genuine leadership.
The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Capital Markets, Senator Osita Izunaso, made the remarks on Wednesday in Abuja during the presentation of a new leadership book authored by Dr Linus Okorie, President of the GOTNI Leadership Centre.
Speaking at the event, Izunaso argued that Nigeria lacks a deliberate system for grooming leaders, noting that many political actors assume authority without the discipline, values, and conduct expected of those entrusted with leadership responsibilities.
He stressed that leadership is not defined by titles or positions but by character and influence, adding that true leaders often emerge naturally rather than through political appointments.
The lawmaker also advised young Nigerians to avoid the obsession with quick wealth, urging them instead to seek positive role models whose values and lifestyles are worth emulating. According to him, money should not be the primary factor in choosing who to admire or follow.
In his remarks, Dr Okorie highlighted the importance of intentional leadership development as a key driver of national progress. He noted that while technology and artificial intelligence are shaping the modern world, sustainable growth still depends on the quality of human leadership.
He explained that nations that have achieved lasting development did so by consciously investing in the training and grooming of future leaders, rather than relying solely on technological advancement.
The book, he said, was written to encourage daily reflection on leadership and to inspire individuals committed to making a positive impact in their communities and institutions.
Concerns about leadership quality have remained a recurring theme in Nigeria’s public discourse, with critics often pointing to weak institutions, policy inconsistency, and a political culture that prioritises loyalty and wealth over competence.
