The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to President Bola Tinubu over the ban of 25 media outfits from Aso Rock.
Kolawole Oluwadare, SERAP Deputy Director, disclosed this in a statement today.
SERAP was reacting to the withdrawal of 25 journalists’ accreditation from covering activities at the Presidential villa.
According to the group, the ban includes those from the Vanguard, Galaxy TV, Ben TV, MITV, ITV Abuja, PromptNews, ONTV, and Liberty.
SERAP urged President Tinubu to publicly instruct officials at the Presidential Villa to reverse the ban.
It stated that media freedom is the cornerstone of Nigeria’s democracy.
SERAP said the ban on the media must be lifted for public interest and accountability.
The Association further recommended that the suggested measures are taken within 48 hours of the receipt or publication of this letter.
SERAP said it shall consider appropriate legal actions to compel the government to comply with its request in the public interest, if there is no response in 48 hours.
