The Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC) has praised CMA CGM Nigeria Shipping Ltd. for eliminating Container Deposit Charges for Nigerian shippers.
In a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja, Mr. Pius Akutah, the Executive Secretary of the council, commended the company’s decision.
Akutah described the removal of the container deposit requirement for all new bookings, effective from May 21, as a customer-centric move that promotes fairness and reduces trade barriers for Nigerian shippers.
“The NSC applauds this initiative, viewing it as a significant step forward in ongoing efforts to reduce trade barriers, improve compliance, and enhance competitiveness at Nigerian ports.
“This policy change is expected to ease the financial burden on shippers, minimize disputes over refunds, and further encourage reforms throughout the maritime sector.
“Removing the container deposit aligns with industry-wide demands for more transparent and cost-effective practices within the port and logistics value chain,” he added.
Akutah also praised CMA CGM Nigeria Shipping Ltd. for valuing customer feedback.
He emphasized that shipping companies should base their decisions and policies on input from customers and operators.
Such an approach, he noted, helps streamline operations, simplify logistics, and enhance service delivery.
Finally, he called on other shipping lines operating in Nigeria to implement similar customer-focused policies to promote fairness, transparency, and greater efficiency in service.
