The Sokoto State Police Command has apprehended the prime suspect in a kidnapping syndicate, 18-year-old Abba Aliyu, who is reportedly a neighbor of the victim’s family in the Badon Hanya area of Sokoto State. This was disclosed in a press statement released by the Command’s spokesman, ASP Ahmed Rufai, on Saturday.
According to the statement, Ibrahim Shehu, the father of the two-year-old victim, Saidu Ibrahim, reported to the Anti-Kidnapping Unit on October 16, 2024, after his son went missing on October 13 at around 6:00 PM. Despite frantic efforts to locate him, the child’s whereabouts remained unknown until the abductor contacted the family, demanding a ransom of N2 million. Following negotiations, the family paid N500,000, which led to the child’s safe release.
The Police swiftly launched an intelligence-led operation, tracing the suspect to the Badon Hanya area, near the Zamson Filling Station, where he was arrested. During interrogation, Abba Aliyu confessed to kidnapping the child with the intent to extort money from the family. Authorities also recovered the Tecno android phone used to demand the ransom.
Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Musa, praised the swift actions of the police team in securing the suspect’s arrest and reiterated the Command’s dedication to tackling crime in the state.
He also provided valuable safety tips for parents to protect their children from criminal elements. These include teaching children basic safety protocols, encouraging them to walk in pairs or groups, staying in well-lit areas, and never accepting gifts or rides from strangers. Musa further urged parents to maintain open communication with their children and ensure they know how to report suspicious activities or individuals.
The Sokoto State Police Command remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents.
