Governor Chukwuma Soludo led the annual Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration at Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, honoring the sacrifices of military personnel past and present. The event brought together veterans, their families, and civil society to pay tribute to those who served the nation.
The day commenced with a solemn procession featuring members of the armed forces, veteran organizations, and local dignitaries. The ceremony culminated in a wreath-laying event at the memorial site, led by Governor Soludo alongside Deputy Governor Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, and State Chief Judge Justice Onochie Anyachebelu. The release of pigeons, symbolizing peace and prosperity, followed the wreath-laying.
In his address, Governor Soludo paid heartfelt tributes to the fallen heroes, reflecting on their sacrifices for the nation’s freedom and security. He strongly criticized what he termed a “conspiracy of silence” among citizens, which he argued fuels criminal activities such as kidnapping for ransom.
The governor pledged continued support for the armed forces and acknowledged the efforts of Anambra vigilante personnel who risk their lives under dire conditions to secure the state. He emphasized the significance of remembering and supporting both current service members and veterans.
The ceremony, part of a larger campaign to raise awareness about veteran issues, included a moment of silence and a 21-gun salute in honor of the nation’s heroes.
Governor Soludo’s remarks underscored the importance of community engagement in addressing veteran welfare and tackling the societal challenges affecting security.
