Sowunmi Criticises ADC Coalition Model, Credits Tinubu, Buhari

the African Democratic Congress (ADC), arguing that its strategy is flawed and wrongly imitates the political blueprint used by President Bola Tinubu and former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Speaking during a televised interview, Sowunmi said the coalition model being advertised by the ADC is neither original nor well thought out. According to him, the only successful coalition playbook in Nigeria’s recent political history was the one that led to the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC), driven largely by Tinubu and Buhari after years of groundwork.

Sowunmi explained that the APC coalition succeeded because it was built on strong political structures, clear leadership, and long-standing alliances, rather than last-minute arrangements. He said attempting to copy that model without the same depth, discipline, and grassroots organisation would not produce similar results.

“You cannot take the playbook of Tinubu and Buhari, which they developed over decades, and expect to defeat them using it,” he said, adding that coalition building requires patience, sacrifice, and ideological clarity.

He further faulted the ADC’s internal processes, accusing some coalition promoters of trying to take over the party without respecting its constitution or established leadership. According to him, such actions only weaken the party and undermine public confidence.

Sowunmi warned that opposition parties seeking to challenge the ruling APC ahead of the 2027 general elections must focus on building credible structures and earning public trust, rather than relying on shortcuts or borrowed strategies.

His remarks come amid growing debates within the opposition over alliances, leadership control, and the most effective path to unseating the APC in the next election cycle.
