Spanish Authorities Near Breakthrough in Jota Fatal Crash Investigation

Madrid, July 8, 2025

Spanish police are reportedly close to determining the cause of the tragic car accident that claimed the life of beloved footballer José Antonio Reyes, known as Jota, on June 1, 2019. The high-profile case has drawn significant attention due to Reyes’ prominence as a former Sevilla and Arsenal star.

According to sources within the Guardia Civil, investigators have gathered critical evidence from the crash site on the A-376 highway near Alcalá de Guadaíra. The accident, which occurred when Reyes’ Mercedes Brabus S550 lost control at high speed, also resulted in the death of his cousin, Jonathan Reyes, and left another passenger, Juan Manuel Calderón, severely injured.

Recent developments suggest that authorities are focusing on several key factors. Preliminary reports indicate that excessive speed may have played a significant role, with estimates suggesting the vehicle was traveling well above the 120 km/h limit. Additionally, investigators are examining potential mechanical issues, including a possible tire blowout, which may have contributed to the loss of control. Forensic analysis of the vehicle’s black box and tire fragments is nearing completion, and officials expect to release findings soon.

“We are working diligently to provide clarity to the families and the public,” said a spokesperson for the Guardia Civil. “We are confident that our investigation will soon pinpoint the exact circumstances of this tragedy.”

Reyes, 35, was a celebrated figure in Spanish football, having won five Europa League titles and played for top clubs like Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid. His untimely death sent shockwaves through the football community, with tributes pouring in from fans and players worldwide.

As the investigation progresses, authorities have urged the public to avoid speculation and respect the privacy of the victims’ families. A full report is expected within the coming weeks, which could bring closure to one of Spain’s most high-profile traffic investigations in recent years.
