SUPER EAGLES COACH ERIC CHELLE REVEALS TOUGH ROAD AHEAD AGAINST SOUTH AFRICA

LAGOS, July 8, 2025

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has sounded a cautious note ahead of Nigeria’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against South Africa, set for September 7. The match, to be played away, is a must-win for Nigeria, who trail group leaders South Africa by six points with only four games remaining in the campaign.

Speaking to reporters after a training session, Chelle acknowledged the formidable challenge posed by Bafana Bafana. “South Africa is a strong side, well-organized and confident. We need to be at our absolute best,” he said. The coach emphasized the need for tactical discipline and improved pressing, areas he identified as weaknesses during Nigeria’s recent 1-1 draw against Russia. “We must win every ball and capitalize on our chances,” Chelle added.

Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup hang in the balance, with the team currently fourth in Group C. Chelle, however, remains optimistic, buoyed by the team’s morale after winning the Unity Cup in London last month. “The boys are hungry. If we win all our remaining games, starting with Rwanda at home, we can still make it,” he said, echoing sentiments shared by defender Bright Osayi-Samuel, who praised Chelle’s unifying leadership.

As the Super Eagles prepare for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2025 next month, Chelle is also scouting domestic talent to bolster the squad. With pressure mounting, Nigerian fans are rallying behind the team, hoping Chelle’s vision will steer them to victory against South Africa and beyond.
