    4,885 OGUN HOUSES SUBMERGED, FG ABSOLVES CAMEROON

    The Federal Government, through the Minister of Water Resources, Mr Suleiman Adamu, has said that the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon was not responsible for the flooding that has devastated parts of Nigeria.

    This is just as the government said no fewer than 4,885 households were affected by the recent flooding in Ogun

    Adamu made this known during the 2023 budget defence of the ministry before the Senate in Abuja on Wednesday.

    The minister attributed the flood to water flowing from tributaries of the River Benue like the River Katsina-Ala and others into the River Benue due to downpour.

    FG CALLS FOR GLOBAL COOPERATION IN RESOLVING MIGRATION ISSUES

    The Federal Government has asked for international cooperation in resolving issues relating to migration and refugee crises.

    At the 73rd session of the Executive Committee, EXCOM, of the High Commissioner’s Programme in Geneva, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq, requested cooperation.

    The Minister listed the initiatives and regulations the Nigerian government had put in place to enhance the provision of humanitarian aid in Nigeria, with a focus on refugees, migrants, and internally displaced people.

    Umar Farouq urged global stakeholders to abstain from racism and bigotry in order to establish lasting peace and enhance the living conditions of disadvantaged communities.

    FG APPROVES CONSTRUCTION OF LEKKI-EPE AIRPORT

    The Federal Government has approved the construction of the Lekki International Airport in the Lekki-Epe area of Lagos State.

    VOP News gathered that the Lagos State Government said it would begin the construction of a new airport in the Lekki-Epe area of the state in 2023.

    The Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, presented the approval for the new airport to the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on behalf of the Federal Government at the Lagos Economic Summit 2022, held at Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos.

    The Senior Special Assistant to the Lagos State Governor on New Media, Jubril Gawat, disclosed this in a tweet.

    FG TO HONOUR LATE YEKINI, JOSHUA

    The late Rashidi Yekini and two-time heavyweight world champion Anthony Joshua are set to receive national honours from President, Muhammadu Buhari at the State House in Abuja on October 11.

    Yekini who died 10 years ago after a protracted illness on May 5 2012 in his native Kwara State will be awarded with a posthumous Member of the Order of the Niger award.

    The prolific striker scored Nigeria’s first-ever goal at the World Cup, against Bulgaria at USA ‘94, and led the way as they won the Africa Cup of Nations in the same year. He is Nigeria’s top international scorer, with 37 goals from 58 games.

    Also, two-time heavyweight world champion Anthony Joshua whose father hails from Sagamu in Ogun State, will be awarded the Officer of The Federal Republic.

    FG SUES META, SEEKS 30 ILLINOIS NAIRA PENALTY

    The Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria says it has lodged a suit against Meta Platforms Incorporated (owners of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp platforms) and its agent AT3 Resources Limited at the Federal High Court, Abuja Judicial Division.

    According to a statement on Tuesday by the apex regulatory body for Nigeria’s advertising ecosystem, ARCON is seeking a declaration among others that the continued publication and exposure of various advertisements directed at the Nigerian market through Facebook and Instagram platforms by Meta Platforms Incorporated without ensuring the same is vetted and approved before exposure is illegal, unlawful and a violation of the extant advertising Law in Nigeria.

    ARCON stated that Meta Platforms Incorporated’s continued exposure of unvetted adverts had also led to loss of revenue to the Federal Government.

    ARCON is seeking N30bn in sanction for the violation of the advertising laws and for loss of revenue as a result of Meta Incorporated’s continued exposure of unapproved adverts on it’s platforms.

    FG TO AMEND LEAKED NATIONAL HONOURS’ LIST AFTER BACKLASH

    The federal government is set to amend a list of persons nominated for national honours.

    The adjustment of the list will be done following concerns over inconsistencies, errors, and the absence of notable names for the awards.

    Over the weekend, VOP News reported that a total of 437 persons were nominated by the federal government to receive national honours.

    The awards will be presented by President Muhammadu Buhari on October 11, at an event scheduled to hold at the state house in Abuja.

    Those listed for the award of commander of the order of the federal republic (CFR) are the late Abba Kyari, former chief of staff; the late Ibrahim Attahiru, former chief of army staff; Monica Dongban-Mensem, president of the court of appeal; Oladayo Amao, chief of air staff, among others.

    In another development, the Federal Government today described the purported list of nominees for national honours being circulated by some online media organisations as fake.

    The media over the weekend was awash with a series of names purported to be on the list of Nigerians to be conferred with the national awards.

    The list of nominees, which has now gone viral on the Internet, has however generated criticisms, especially over the caliber of people nominated for awards.

    But in a statement signed by the Director Press, Federal Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-governmental Affairs, Julie Jacobs, the government debunked the list saying it will publish the list at the appropriate time and medium.

    The Federal Government has declared that Benin, Kaduna and Kano electricity distribution companies were the worst-performing Discos among the 11 power distributors in Nigeria.

    It stated that based on this, the government through the Bureau of Public Enterprises and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission had resolved to sell the majority interest in the three Discos to competent investors.

    The Director-General, BPE, Alex Okoh, disclosed this in a statement he personally signed while reacting to the resistance by some Discos on the move by Fidelity Bank and the government to take over and restructure poor-performing Discos.
