Telecoms Tariff Hike Shouldn’t Exceed 60% — Minister/Vop

The Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, has stated that the Federal Government will not permit telecom companies to implement a 100 per cent tariff increase, despite their demands.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, Tijani acknowledged the need for a tariff adjustment in the telecoms sector due to rising operational costs, inflation, and the naira’s devaluation. However, he stressed that the government would only consider an increase ranging from 30 to 60 per cent.

“We have already made it clear that we are not going to approve 100 per cent,” Tijani said, adding that such a hike would harm Nigerians, as the telecom sector drives economic growth m.m
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is currently evaluating the proposed adjustments, with emphasis on balancing the financial sustainability of telecom operators and the potential impact on consumers.

Earlier, MTN Nigeria CEO Karl Toriola revealed that telecom operators are united in their request for a 100 per cent tariff increase. During an interview on January 3, he explained that the industry faces significant challenges, including inflation and currency devaluation, making the adjustment necessary to stabilize operations.

“So, I’m not sure they [the government] will give us 100 per cent, but I am optimistic they will give us something substantial,” Toriola said.

The Minister also emphasized that telecom operators must continue to upgrade their infrastructure to enhance service quality, underscoring the importance of finding a balance that supports both the sector’s growth and consumer welfare.

The NCC is expected to finalize its recommendations on the tariff adjustment soon.
