Those Power Lines Are Not Suitable for Modern-Day Electricity — Mr. Fanimo

Lagos — Economic analyst and energy commentator, Mr. Fanimo, has raised serious concerns about Nigeria’s aging electricity infrastructure, describing the nation’s power transmission lines as outdated and incapable of supporting modern energy demands.

Speaking during a live interview on VOP TV, Fanimo said the country’s power challenges are not only due to generation shortfalls but also the inefficiency of the transmission network, which he described as “a major bottleneck” in the entire electricity value chain.

“Those power lines are not suitable for modern-day electricity. We are still using old infrastructure that cannot handle the kind of load or stability required in today’s energy systems,” he stated.

Fanimo noted that while successive governments have invested heavily in power generation projects, little attention has been given to upgrading transmission and distribution systems, resulting in frequent blackouts, load shedding, and energy losses.

He added that the continued use of obsolete equipment means that even when generation improves, much of the electricity fails to reach consumers due to system inefficiencies.

“It’s like pouring water into a leaking bucket — no matter how much you generate, the people won’t get it if your transmission network is weak,” he explained.

Fanimo urged the Federal Government and relevant agencies to modernize the power grid, integrate smart technologies, and strengthen public-private partnerships to ensure reliable and sustainable power delivery.

Energy experts have long argued that upgrading Nigeria’s transmission infrastructure is essential to achieving stable electricity supply, attracting investment, and driving industrial growth across the country.
