French authorities on Tuesday confirmed the deaths of three migrants — including two children — during an attempted English Channel crossing, with three others still missing.
The incident occurred off the coast of Pas-de-Calais, while in a separate case Kent Police reported that a woman died during another attempted crossing.
The tragedies come amid a surge in crossings following a 10-day weather-related lull. On September 6, UK Home Office figures showed 1,096 arrivals in a single day, pushing total Channel crossings in 2025 beyond 30,000 — the earliest the milestone has been reached since records began in 2018.
The rise coincided with the first meeting of Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s new Cabinet, where Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood faces mounting pressure to address the escalating migrant crisis.
